4ThePlayer released 7×7 Zeus Max yesterday, the sequel to the player-favourite 2024 title 7×7 Zeus. Available via Yggdrasil Gaming’s Masters Program, the game brings back the original’s expanding reels and pay anywhere mechanics while introducing locked multipliers and a more active Zeus character. With a max win of 17,650x, high volatility, and multipliers that can double up to 500x, the game offers returning players plenty of new layers to explore. We spoke with Henry McLean, Co-Founder, Commercial and Marketing Director at 4ThePlayer, about evolving the sequel, the role of Zeus, and what players can expect from the studio next.

Banner of 7×7 Zeus Max by 4ThePlayerGamingslots: With 7×7 Zeus Max returning as a sequel to the 2024 release, what specific aspect of the game’s personality were you most eager to evolve for returning players?

Henry McLean: The original had a strong identity because you could physically see the game growing as thunder scatters expanded the reels. With 7×7 Zeus Max, we wanted to keep that recognisable core but give returning players more to discover through locked multipliers and an active Zeus character. That is something we always look for with sequels at 4ThePlayer: keeping what made the original distinctive, but making sure there is a genuine reason to come back to it.

We wanted Zeus to have a genuine reason to be there rather than just looking dramatic in the background! Lightning coins visually feed into him, and he can strike locked multipliers

GS: You’ve introduced locked multipliers this time around. What kind of player experience were you aiming to create by adding this new layer of progression to the math model?

HM: We wanted to create more interesting moments within a spin. A strong multiplier can land locked, then winning dropdowns can remove its lives, while Zeus can also strike the reels and help unlock it. It creates another layer of anticipation without making the core game harder to understand, which is always important to us.

GS: How does the Zeus character evolve or reveal himself as players spend more time with the game? Having him act as an active “visual entertainment pot” beside the reels seems like a deliberate shift in the on-screen dynamic.

HM: We wanted Zeus to have a genuine reason to be there rather than just looking dramatic in the background! Lightning coins visually feed into him, and he can strike locked multipliers, so he feels much more connected to the reels. His displayed charge is purely visual entertainment, though and does not indicate that a feature is due.

GS: The game combines a “pay anywhere” system with expanding thunder scatters. How do these different mechanics work together to create varied base-game sessions?

HM: They work really naturally together. Seven or more matching symbols anywhere create a win, while thunder scatters can expand the reel area in different directions, up to 49 symbols. That means the reel shape and available space can change quite dramatically from one sequence to another. We like mechanics that are easy to understand individually but create a lot of variety when they start interacting.

GS: With winning symbols disappearing to let new ones fall in and multipliers doubling on every win, the on-screen action can escalate quickly. What is 4ThePlayer’s approach to making these complex mechanics feel intuitive rather than overwhelming?

HM: Our rule is that each mechanic should be easy to understand on its own. That is something we care about a lot at 4ThePlayer: we like games with real depth, but you should be able to understand why something happened just by watching the reels. Symbols disappear, new ones drop in, thunder scatters expand the reels, and multipliers visibly increase. The depth comes from those simple ideas interacting, not from asking players to learn lots of complicated rules.

Expanded thunder reels stay expanded and the bonus multiplier can build across the free spins, so the screen can look very different by the end compared with where it started.

GS: This sequel brings high volatility and a 17,650x max win. How does the overall design cater to players dropping in for shorter sessions versus those committing to longer playing periods in pursuit of those bigger hits?

HM: We would never suggest that playing for longer makes a bigger result more likely, because every round is independent and random. Instead, we focus on making individual spins interesting, with expanding reels, multipliers, dropdowns and Zeus all creating variety within the base game itself. We always promote responsible play, and the game should be enjoyable whether someone plays for a short period or longer.

GS: During the divine free spins, the thunder reels persist and win multipliers are collected to increase future wins. What’s the ideal emotional journey you want players to experience once they trigger this bonus feature?

There are lots of intriguing games still to come. To tease just a few, 9K Wild Yeti Dream Drop sends our famous Yeti on a Dream Drop adventure, while 3 Cash Chameleons gives us a completely new theme and one of our most active balances to date.

HM: The key is that the feature develops as it goes. Expanded thunder reels stay expanded and the bonus multiplier can build across the free spins, so the screen can look very different by the end compared with where it started. That sense of progression and potential is what makes the feature work for me, and it is the sort of visual, easy-to-follow progression we really enjoy building into our games.

GS: As we head toward the end of the year, how does this specific game fit into 4ThePlayer’s broader roadmap, and what more can players expect from the studio in the coming months?

HM: There are lots of intriguing games still to come. To tease just a few, 9K Wild Yeti Dream Drop sends our famous Yeti on a Dream Drop adventure, while 3 Cash Chameleons gives us a completely new theme and one of our most active balances to date. We also have 4 Fantastic Vikings Hold the Gold, the third instalment in the series, which takes it in a very different and popular direction, and 5 Flaming Dollars Hot Spot, a sequel to our North American hit where even a spin with no win can create something super fun.

There are a few more beyond those too, so it is a really varied mix, which is exactly how we like our roadmap to look. What I think that mix shows is what 4ThePlayer has always been about: creating games with clear identities, strong mechanics and ideas that feel like ours rather than simply following what everyone else is doing.
