The UK government is set to introduce measures to restrict stake limits for online slots in a bid to curb gambling addiction. As part of this initiative, a £5 per spin limit will be enforced for adults aged 25 and over, while those aged 18 to 24 will face a £2 per spin limit.

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) is planning to raise taxes on gambling companies in order to finance addiction treatment programs. The actions by the UK government are intended to promote safer gambling practices, although the betting industry’s main lobbying organisation has expressed concerns about the government potentially losing sight of the bigger picture.
Rise in problem gambling
Data from the charity GamCare indicates a significant increase in online slot gambling addiction since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. In the reporting period of 2023-2024, 45% of the 6,697 callers to the National Gambling Helpline cited issues related to online slot games, a notable rise from 34% in 2020-2021. Concurrently, the NHS has observed a rise in the number of individuals seeking treatment for gambling problems, with referrals more than doubling compared to the previous year.
Gambling minister Fiona Twycross highlighted that the introduction of stake limits for online slots aims to safeguard vulnerable individuals, particularly young adults, from the harms of gambling addiction.
Baroness Twycross emphasised the “detrimental impact that gambling addiction” can have on individuals’ financial stability, relationships, and overall well-being. The government’s plan to impose a tax on the betting industry, earmarked specifically for addressing gambling addiction, marks a significant step towards ensuring that support services are adequately funded.
