YouTube has recently announced an update to its policies regarding online gambling content, which will come into effect on March 19th. The platform aims to enhance its measures to safeguard viewers from potentially harmful content in this category.

Regulated sites

One of the key changes involves strengthening the existing policies concerning illegal or regulated goods and services. YouTube will no longer permit any form of directing viewers to gambling sites or applications that are not certified by Google. This prohibition extends to various forms of promotion, including URLs, links within images or text, visual displays such as logos, and verbal references. Moreover, content that guarantees returns may be removed, irrespective of the approval status of the online gambling platform by Google.

Protecting younger users

In cases where content does not violate the Community Guidelines but includes depictions or promotions of online casino sites or apps, YouTube may opt to apply age restrictions. This means that certain online gambling content, excluding online sports betting and depictions of in-person gambling, will be restricted from view by signed-out users or individuals under the age of 18.

Community protections

While these policy updates may impact creators who produce online gambling-related content like casino games and applications, Google asserts that these changes are essential to protect the YouTube community, particularly younger audiences. The platform remains dedicated to assisting creators while simultaneously fostering a secure and responsible environment for all users.
