Keeping Up With The Paddys slot is so stereotyped it simply has to be a parody of the tedious Irish theme, which may be the case as Cayetano are Paddy Power’s in-house slots developer. The reels are set against the lounge of an Irish cottage and we hear the clink of whiskey glasses as they stop and of course the traditional fiddle music in the background. This house isn’t a place for domestic bliss though as the hapless Paddy gets attacked by his harridan of a wife, probably deservedly. At least we don’t see any leprechauns though (although the man here looks suspiciously like the character in Ash Gaming’s Leprechaun Luck) but can Paddy grant fortune on your bankroll instead?
On the reels…
Paddy gives us 20 pay lines of 5 reels of 3 rows and the best-paying symbol, the Wild Shamrock (what else?) is stacked on all reels for which you get 50x bet for a 5-of-a-kind win. Paddy pays 15x, his wife 10x, the necklace 9x and ring 7.5 x for a full line, the remainder being stacked card values paying 6.5x down to 2.5x for all 5. You have scatters on reels 1 and 3 with three different kinds on reel 5 to decide which of the game’s 3 bonus rounds you are awarded, but first we must face the wrath of Mrs. Paddy!
There are 6 horseshoes over the reels and when Mrs. Paddy gets mad she will appear and toss some or all of them at Paddy, who fends them off with a frying pan whereby they rebound to random positions on the grid. Occasionally she puts stew on the stove and if it explodes, it will place a 3×3 super-stacked Wild on the grid!
You may get one of three depending on the 5th. reel icon.
Free spins – awards 8 to 20 spins with the Mr’s Paddy’s tantrums far more frequent than in the base game.
Drinking bonus – Paddy and his wife are given the first of 3 barrels of whiskey with maximum awards on them of 50x, 150x or 300x. They both take turns to guzzle whiskey until they pass out and then you are paid the amount they stopped at. Hopefully they have hollow legs as then you get top prize if they drain the cask fully and move on to the next – drain them all and 500x is the jackpot!
Irish jig bonus – You are taken to a dance show and prizes are awarded for the length of time of the dancing and their performance.
Keeping up with The Paddys slot is awful in a nice way, as it was designed with a sense of humour regarding the theme. You will need a good sense of humour though as the RTP is 94.16% which isn’t great and the game is quite volatile with features hard to come by unlike say Cayetano’s Egyptian Wilds. You will be playing for the features though as the base game seldom awards anything good unless through Mrs. Paddy’s random tantrums. The effects and graphics are pretty basic and let’s just say I won’t be challenging these two old soaks to a drinking contest anytime soon…
