Butterfly Staxx slot review

butterfly staxx slot main gameButterfly Staxx slot, if you are a NetEnt aficionado, will pretty instantly have you thinking "Neon Staxx, but with pretty little insects?" As this is the second occasion on which NetEnt have used the alternative interpretation of the word 'stacks'. Needless to say, the term is relevant as Butterfly Staxx does use the same 40-line stacked format as Neon Staxx but before you shout 'CLONE', let me reassure you the game does have some differences! The reels are still transparent and lie over a twilight fantasy fairytale scene. Your soundtrack is a continuous loop of rather annoying synthesized soft music, but most importantly can these butterflies stack-up your bankroll?

On the reels...

Having 40 pay lines as you would expect there are four rows over these 5 reels instead of the usual three and you pay 20 coins per spin. All symbols can appear stacked as said, but the pays are crushingly low, in fact, I cannot recall a game with such a low-volatility paytable. The White Butterflies have two roles, firstly as the top-paying icon at 3x bet for a 5-of-a-kind line and secondly as the game's in-play feature.

Any full stack of White Butterflies will migrate to the left-hand reel along with any other Butterflies in view along the same row they appear on. You then get re-spins until no further butterflies appear, and are paid the total of any 2-of-a-kinds or better that occur along the way. A Wild Flower symbol can appear anywhere too as a substitute but is not stacked nor does it multiply any of the disappointing symbol awards.

The remaining icons are equally poor in returns - you get 2x bet for a full line of 5 of either the pink, purple or blue flower and 1x bet for the four different card values. There are pink flower buds (that seem very similar to those used as scatters on the far more entertaining Jungle Spirit game) and should you land 3, 4 or 5 of these anywhere you get awarded 5, 6 or 7 free games.

Butterfly spins...

Having earned yourself the free games round which inevitably has no retrigger possibility, you will see the reel icons are all replaced by Green Cocoons. After the first spin, some (hopefully) will develop into a White Butterfly and then migrate along the row(s) they appear on to the left and stick there after paying any returns. The remaining undeveloped Cocoons spin again and like before any Butterflies that develop migrate along the row leftwards. Wins are paid, and this continues until the games have ended. The only difference we get in these Butterfly Spins is that unlike the base game, the Butterflies don't need to fill a whole reel before they migrate left.

Our View...

Butterfly Staxx slot has one thing going for it - the 96.80% RTP. Aside from this, the game is utterly terrible. Wins aren't that frequent, getting 10x or better in the base game is difficult and if that doesn't grind you down as fast as your balance, then the turgid misery of the music certainly will. You get the full-staxx re-spin and seldom do any more Butterflies appear, and although I was so incredulous I had to check this twice, you can't exceed 120x bet on any spin. If I never see this dire game again, it will be too soon. I don't believe in using chemicals in the garden, but I hurriedly left this slot feeling insecticides were the only answer...
