Grim Muerto slot review

grim muerto main gamePlay'n Go are a young, but dynamic slot developer based in Sweden. Their games can be found at many multi-platform casinos and their latest release Grim Muerto is no different. The theme may be dark in that 'Muerto' means death! In Mexico and many other Spanish-speaking nations there is a celebration day near our Halloween whereby the 'Day of The Dead' celebrates deceased relatives. Skulls and token offerings are left outside the house along with grotesque masks. When I visited Mexico the locals spared me this effort having seen my missus was accompanying me.

Expanding Wilds will be the death of you

The game has 20 paylines and 3 rows with 5 reels. Each spin has one reel highlighted which if a wild lands on, will expand. The symbols are different types of skulls of which the best pay 35x stake for a 5-of-a-kind (5OAK) and of course the A,K,Q,J,10 of which the lowest pays 3.75x stake for a 50AK. The wilds don't multiply but 5OAK will pay 50x stake.

Considering their predicament, the skulls are quite jolly-looking characters and the 4 types of them do come into play with a little quirk: should you get the classic 2-scatter 'heartstopper' and fail to get the third necessary for the free spins trigger, you get a 'second chance' whereby you pick from a grid of the 4 skulls of which one may conceal the third scatter necessary to trigger them! Should you fail you may get nothing, or uncover a small win for your trouble.

Golden Skulls lead to Free Spins

This conveniently brings me to the bones of the game (ahem!) which are the free spins. 3 Golden Skull scatters derived from the reels or second chance feature trigger the 10 free games. There is no multiplier but there is a decent enhancement whereby the single illuminated reel I mentioned above will actually become between 2 and 5 reels randomly selected each spin in the bonus. As you know, this means any illuminated wild will expand - but wait! In addition to the usual wild you will find one of the 4 skull symbols will also be wild for the duration of the free games and similarly expand should it appear.

You may have already worked out that this means 1000x stake is possible for a spin should you achieve a full screen of wilds. You may also retrigger the 10 spins with three scatters (which have now turned pink, the colour of the living) or get extra spins with 6 for two scatters or 3 for one.

Our View...

I wouldn't say that you will be gravely disappointed with this slot, but be aware the action does lie mainly in the bonus round. This is where the big win potential sits. The game isn't that volatile so unlike the name suggests you won't see too many consecutive dead spins. The feature isn't too hard to trigger but you may have to be as patient as the departed awaiting that big return. As for more muerto-related games, IGT's Day of the Dead follows a similar theme.
