The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) is seriously considering banning deposits to gambling sites using a credit card. The regulator, who have been rolling out a number of measures to make gambling online safer, stated that consumers should not gamble with money they don’t have.
Several gambling operators have argued that credit card deposits are used between 10% and 20% of deposits online. The regulator has not enforced anything yet as they fear a ban may force some people to use payday loans to fund their accounts instead.
Other considerations currently being considered by the UKGC include improving age verification processes, banning sites from “free-to-play” gambling games to minors and tackling “unacceptable marketing and advertising practices”.
These latest suggestions were considered during a consultation by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) into online gambling earlier this year. The government’s review also flagged the use of credit cards as a potential problem.
