Cash Noire slot by Netent is one of the few games that instantly hooked me in via the superb appearance, adventure music and graphics it displays. The theme is mystery with dark characters doing business in back alleys which we see as the backdrop here and I think someone is trying to apprehend them. Crime Pays slot by WMS is the nearest in terms of appearance (that I can find anyway!) and we are far ahead of Netent's own and pretty mundane Crime Scene game and also their more Miami Vice - styled Hotline slot. So will this game indeed mean a black day for our bankroll?
As it's a 1024-way game we get 5 reels of 4 rows on Cash Noire slot. Symbols can appear stacked in the Black Cat Detective Agency and winning ones disappear to be replaced from above. The 5-of-a-kind pays are Lady with Cigarette 4x bet, Villain 3x, Detective 1.5x, Girl 1x, Gun or Dagger 0.3x, Card or Whiskey 0.25x and finally Matches or Magnifying Glass 0.2x. There are no Wilds but a Safe mystery symbol can appear anywhere. We do get some modifiers in the red boxes on the grid though.
You will always see at least a box of at least 3 symbols surrounded by red each spin, called the Crime Zone. If a mystery Safe lands, it will fill the whole box. Any other winning symbol inside it will activate a clue from the Clue List which is a meter that shows progression towards triggering the free spins, hence the fact there's no scatters here. When 3 to 6 clues are activated, your Crime Zone box increases to 4 positions, or if within the same spin 5 positions for 7 or more. When all 13 clues are checked on the Detective's notice board on the left, 6 free games are triggered.
You will get a 5-position Crime Zone throughout covering random patterns. You will also notice a City Chase map on the left now and each winning symbol landing in the Crime Zone ticks off a location. When you've collected 7, your multiplier increases by 1x. You also get 2 extra spins markers on the map and extra multipiers which can be 1-10x. Should you clear all the markers on the map, you get 'Case Closed' and 3 extra spins which along with any you have left are all now played at 10x. Quite exciting, good to watch but hard to get right!
Cash Noire slot is superb as regards the graphics, sounds, animations and overall mood it sets. It's not very volatile with limited potential so you'd be lucky to hit over 100x in the feature although the RTP at 96.06% isn't bad. This is a shame as with big-hit potential this would be a 5-star game but as with many games, Netent just get the maths wrong and the player soon tires of the egg-timer effect the games have on the balance. That said, you'll get a good run for your money here and a few free games rounds which are very entertaining. This game may not get your bankroll back in the noire, but it won't get too far into the rouge either...
