Buffalo Charge slot by Core Gaming isn't too bad when you consider some of the terrible slots Core have released lately, the worst being Sean Kelly's Storage Auctions. This is perhaps a little unfair though as this developer wasn't too bad before that aberration and the mighty buffalo usually provides some great material for volatile slots and high potential as we saw with Playtech's Buffalo Blitz and going right back to Aristocrat's original Buffalo. Here the game looks quite basic with the prairie behind the transparent reels but some powerful tribal music makes up for this to some extent as do the buffalo sound effects. So will this buffalo be charging our bankroll too much for the experience here or can we escape those mighty hooves with our cash intact?
We get 25 fixed pay lines over a grid of 5 reels or 4 rows apiece on Buffalo Charge slot and your symbols aside from bonus tiles and Wilds appear stacked and singly. You get 20x bet for the best 5-of-a-kind which is either the Buffalo Wild or Buffalo itself, then 12x Eagle or Bear, 10x Cougar or Wolf with five card values of either 8x or 4x for a full line. There aren't any random modifiers but the Wilds can produce a Buffalo Charge when two or more land in view.
When 2 or more Wilds land, the Buffalo will charge between them creating Wilds on tiles he passes. For example, if the Wild appeared on the top of reel 1 and top of reel 5, the reel 1 Buffalo will charge across to the other one on reel 5, creating a single Wild Line across the top row.
You need the lucky Horseshoe on reel 3 only to trigger a pick from 3 Horseshoes. You will either get a cash award, a Buffalo Spin where at least one Buffalo Wild will appear on the grid, but usually 2 for a decent win. You final prize could be the free spins of which you get 5 to 12. During these free spins, any bonus symbol appearing increases the multiplier by 1x and adds an extra free spin. You can get the Buffalo Charge feature in the free spins and if you run over a bonus symbol on reel 3, it still adds a spin and multiplier before the Buffalo crosses it.
Despite its simplicity, Buffalo Charge slot is fun to play and a decent execution of the common buffalo theme too. The music and sound effects are what make the game as the appearance is average at best but there can be some good wins in both the base game and especially the free games. Of course, we get the drawback which I personally detest in that you can trigger the bonus only to get a tawdry cash prize when you really want the fun of free games, but this is one rare occasion I can overlook it! The RTP is not huge at 95.34% but that won't deter me from another trip to the wild prairies here...
