Dwarf Mine slot review

dwarf mine slot gameDwarf Mine slot seems to emulate many games recently where the developer seems to think that if we can't have Megaways, we'll have expanding reel grids for more ways. Red Tiger did this with Laser Fruit as did Thunderkick with their admittedly very good slot Carnival Queen and this mechanic is used here. There are elements of Vikings Go Berzerk too with the cumulative free games rounds but the theme here is a rather jolly looking miner with the grid over a gloomy mine tunnel and even more threatening music as we spin the reels. So will we tunnel our way to treasure here or will the roof fall in on our bankroll?

On The Reels...

There are 1024 ways to win on Dwarf Mine slot so no fixed pay lines and symbols are stacked on the 5 reels of 4 rows each. As usual Yggdrasil keep things simple with two distinct sets of symbols, with a third set held back as we'll soon see. You pay 25 coins to spin and the Hat pays 35, Pick 30, Lamp 25 and Spade 20 with four card suits all awarding 15 coins for a full way. There are no Wilds at all but there is a tunnel boring machine which is the bonus scatter on reels 1,3 and 5 and which can expand any reel it lands on temporarily.

Expanded reels

If you see 3 Tunnelling Machines on 1,3 and 5 you get the free games but there's much to discover in this mine before we get to those. A single, or 2 scatters will add one row to their reel from the bottom of the grid. If nothing is added that will create any extra wins, or create a win the reel shrinks back immediately. You may reveal another scatter which means the grid expands another row too and this is a way to trigger the free games without the 3 scatters all dropping in naturally. The real interest here though are the Super High Gems, the third set of symbols I mentioned earlier, as these can only reveal themselves in these expanded areas.

Collection Spins

You will have seen 4 mine carts by the right of the grid. Each contains a number of coloured gems and you need to accumulate 5 in any cart to trigger that type of free games. When the reels expand in the base game you may reveal a gem which is added to the respective cart. When it's full you get 5 free games and stacks of that particular Super High Gem are added to the reels which expand to 7 rows high or 16807 ways, for the duration. The 5-of-a-kinds for this third set of symbols pays 100 coins for Red, 90 Blue, 80 Orange and 70 Green.

Free Spins

Accumulating 3 scatters whether straight in on the reels or more usually by landing one scatter and then revealing more with the reel expansion, grants you 10 free spins. There are no retriggers but again you play 16807 Ways as all the reels expand to 7 rows high for the duration. Some good wins can occur and the spins seem to trigger with reasonable ease.

Our View...

Dwarf Mine slot is visually very good as you generally find with Yggdrasil games and the animations and sound effects complement the theme really well. The expanding single reels occur frequently so there's always something going on too. There is some decent potential in the free games of all types in spite of the low 5OAK pays due to the reels being 7 rows high. The RTP here is actually 96.80% as opposed to most of Yggdrasil's slots being 96.10% so there's a bit of extra playtime in the long term as well. The dwarf seems happy enough to be working down this mine, maybe it's worth paying him a visit...
