Spina Colada slot review
Spina Colada slot is one to get you in the mood for your annual summer vacation, or if like myself you don't get one at least it will help you imagine the nice resorts everyone else visits. Mini violin anyone? So I cast my eye over the reels set in a Caribbean beach bar with a straw roof and enviously view the bright cocktails lined up within it, and the beautiful white beach and palm trees behind. It's a little classier to look at then Playtech's Beach Life or Microgaming's Spring Break so can Spina Colada deliver us the holiday of a lifetime?
On the reels...
On the standard 5x3 grid we get 25 paylines and icons consisting of various fruits and cocktails. The symbols appear singly but this doesn't matter as we will discover when the game mechanics become apparent. There is a Wild with the game's logo but it can't pay on its own as it changes to any symbol it matches with. Of these the pink cocktail is top award at 8x bet for 5-of-a-kind, then blue and yellow cocktails at 6x and 5x bet respectively. No card values, instead we get 5 sliced fruits including pineapples and kiwis all offering 1x stake or a fraction lower or higher.
The mechanics of the game are like the Barber Shop Uncut slot - any wins will freeze in place and the remaining icons spin and stop repeatedly until no further icons are added to any winning lines. We do indeed literally see them freeze as the symbols are encased in an ice cube before the remaining ones spin.
You will see multipliers above the reels, 2x above reel 2 to 5x above reel 5. If you freeze the whole reel then the multiplier takes effect progressively, in other words completely fill reels 1 and 2 and the 2x applies, fill the first 3 reels and the 3x applies and so-on. This means a full screen will multiply the win 5x, therefore the top pay in the base game is 1000x bet!
Frozen free spins
There are 4 meters, 2 either side of the reels each representing a type of free game. When they fill you trigger 4 free spins in all cases, which are non-retriggerable. Each colour/type has its own enhancement and you will see a single spin with that enhancement occur each time the relevant 'feature cap' appears randomly at the start of any spin. When you fill a meter you get 4 in one go but while waiting you at least get a single one when adding to the meters. These are:
Blue Cap - 2nd. Chance which will add a winning symbol when otherwsie the repsins would have ended.
Green Cap - Full Line entry which means the spin will start with an automatic 5-of-a-kind win in place.
Red Cap - Extra Wilds where you start the spin with 2 Wilds on the grid and extra ones added to the reels.
Yellow Cap - Guaranteed Win x 3 which spins the reels until a winning combination occurs, then the repsins start and any result is muliplied by 3x.
Spina Colada slot is an imaginative reworking of the old 'sticky wins' format with the multipliers above the reels and different enhancements offered in the free games. The graphics are easy on you and the music not too intrusive, while the RTP is Yggdrasil's quite common 96.30% figure. Those whom have played Yggdrasil's Vikings Go Berserk and have noticed the game 'die' when one more symbol is needed for the cumulatively-triggered feature will undoubtedly be wary of this method of bonus initiation. I am too if the truth be told, but that's really the only negative of this quite fun game with the potential to pay up to 3000x bet in the feature. I can see myself sipping a pina colada at bar Spina Colada...
