Sparks slot summary
I'm not going to lie. When I heard slots maker NetEnt was launching a new slots title called Sparks I was adamant I was experiencing deja vu. It appears these days that the developer is intent on releasing one-word slots or light-related titles that they hope will set the pulses racing and give a feeling of excitement about the game. So far, they've failed miserably with a conveyor belt of average releases, such as the below-par Glow. Is Sparks the one to buck the negative trend?
Will Sparks Catch Fire?
Sparks is a 5 reel, 20 payline slot that is all about, well, sparks from fire. The best way to describe the style of the symbols is when you have a sparkler on Bonfire Night and you move it around to spell your name or draw something. The light trail that the sparks leaves is basically the exact image that is used to create the symbols on the reels. There is a red spark trail, orange spark trail, green spark trail, purple spark trail, and blue spark trail. There are also the regular 10-through-to-Ace symbols presented in spark trail form. Despite it intending to look fiery and stunning, it actually looks a bit bland.
Win One Way or Both Ways!
The first thing you will be asked when loading Sparks is whether you want to play “Win One Way” or “Win Both Ways”. This gives you the chance to decide if you want to play with the chance to win just from left to right or to have the potential to win both ways. What's the difference I hear you ask? Well, “Win One Way” means that paylines pay out if in succession from the furthest left reel to the furthest right reel only. “Win Both Ways” means that paylines pay out if in succession from both left to right and right to left on the reels. It is possible to switch the mode of game play during gameplay with the two icons available on the bottom right of the reels. You simply just click on the mode you wish to play in.
W is for Wild
The Wild symbol is represented by the letter “W” inside a blue spark orb. This can not only appear anywhere on the reels but will substitute for any other symbol, except for the Expanding Cloning Wilds, to complete winning combinations across the reels.
Win Bigger with Expanding Cloning Wilds
The Expanding Cloning Wild symbol is basically the normal Wild symbol except it can expand down the entire reel and it appears as a “W” inside an orange spark orb. Unfortunately, it can only appear on reels 2 and 4. When it appears, it will either stay as a single Wild or will expand up, down, or both ways on the reel.

Sadly, but unsurprisingly, that's for this slot. We've kind of been here before with lacklustre gaming from NetEnt with their other slots such as the slight more amusing Glow and the equally awful Neon Staxx. In fact, I would say this slot could potentially be more mundane than their exceedingly mediocre Stickers slot. I'm afraid the days of getting all excited over a NetEnt slot release have well and truly disappeared.
