Route of Mexico slot is set in a border town between the Untied States and Mexico. Already I am thinking this could be a politically motivated game before I have even started playing! Don't mention any walls...

Route of Mexico had 20 pay lines over the standard 5 reels and 3 row format. The symbols are all single and reflect the people and wildlife of the region. The reels start with the 'whooshing' sound straight from the land games and have the Novomatic-style tapping when they stop. The Senor and Senorita offer the highest pays for 5-of-a-kind at 50 and 25x stake respectively, down to the lowest card icon at 5x stake. You will see an Armadillo, Eagle and Coatis (Racoon-like creature) accompanying the happy couple.
Wilds appear on the middle 3 reels in the form of giant cacti and those reels also house the game's scatters which are represented by a 1950's classic car (jalopy) which looks like it was fortunate to last long enough to travel as far as the border! Landing these 3 jalopies will trigger a short but potentially lucrative bonus round. As with all EGT games, you have the chance to get a random Progressive Jackpot with 4 levels, the same as Playtech's Marvel Jackpots.
Bonus features
Once the 3 scatters land, you get 3 free games. The enhancement is that the Wilds turn into Wild Reels in order 2-3-4 for each of the free spins. So the first spin sees reel 2 as a Sticky Wild Reel, the second reels 2 and 3 and the third all 3 centre reels are Wild. There is a different reel set used and you get an 'extra spin' symbol on reel 1. Should this land it delays the adding of the next Wild reel. So should it come on the first spin, you will get one extra spin with just reel 2 Wild. If it came on the second, you would get one extra spin with reels 2 and 3 Wild and so-on. So ideally you'd like to see it appear on the final spin when all 3 reels are Wild! This bonus is similar to that of WMS's Black Knight games, except you are guaranteed the Wild Reels.
Our View...
Route of Mexico slot has decent pay potential and a decent RTP although this can be operator-set to less than the default 95% level. The sounds and graphics are pleasant for the player and the base game has some good awards possible. The real catch for this slot though is the structure of the bonus - it is quite hard to get less than 40-50x stake for it and with matching premium symbols either end of the last spin with 3 Wild Reels it can potentially pay substantial wins. Time to get in my jalopy and hit Route 188...
