If you thought that the 1980s were confined to an era of Madonna, shell suits, and perms then you’re sadly mistaken. The established slots developer NetEnt has decided to take us back to this electropop period with this Neon Staxx slot.
It’s Got Love for You, If You Were Born In the 80s…
Neon Staxx is a 5 reel, 40 payline slot game where the music sounds like it is straight out of a Nintendo console computer game and the graphics have been developed by the team behind the Tron movie. If you lived and loved the 80s then you might be getting excited right now. If you didn’t then you might struggle to last this entire review.
Check Out the “Predator Symbols”
The symbols included on the reels consist of different animals represented in a neon form. There is a lion, panther, eagle, and snake. Quite humorously, these animal symbols are called the “predator symbols”. There are also the regular Jack-through-to-Ace symbols that make up the remaining symbols on the reels. There could be more variety but the symbols are far from the main drawing point here.
Staxx of Stacked Symbols
The clue is in the name of the slot. The SuperStaxx feature is when Stacked Symbols appear on the reels. The randomly selected symbol can appear as a set of Stacked Symbols at the beginning of each spin. Only the “predator symbols” can appear as Stacked Symbols. Needless to say, these Stacked Symbols vastly increase the odds of you hitting winning combinations on the reels.
Win Bigger with the Wilds
Your chances of hitting winning combinations are only made even better with the game’s Wild symbol. These symbols substitute for all other symbols, except for the game’s Scatters, to complete any potential winning combinations on the reels.
Win up to 20 Free Spins
The Scatters are the key to triggering the free spins bonus round. If you hit three of them across the reels you will receive 10 free spins. Hitting four of the Scatters on the reels will earn you 15 free spins. If you are lucky enough to hit five Scatters on the reels you will win 20 free spins. The Stacked Symbols can still appear on the reels during the free spins bonus round. The only difference is that the Scatters cannot appear as Stacked Symbols during the free spins.
Neon Staxx got me slightly breathless when I saw the preview because the 80s are a big guilty pleasure of mine and I also love seeing Stacked Symbols. Unfortunately, this slot feels like it could do with a bit more bang for its buck. NetEnt appears to be happy to release slots that are carbon copies of previous releases. The surfer-filled Wild Water slot and the bizarre Wild Turkey slot are examples of how to use Stacked Symbols effectively. NetEnt have failed to do so here and simply giving you poor payouts for Stacked Symbols on every spin without ever hitting a big win can become quite tedious.
