Volts And Bolts slot as the name suggests has one of these Frankenstein lab-based themes like Microgaming's Dr Watts Up and IGT's Dr. Frantic with all the nonsensical icons you'd expect from the subject. Your reels are over a shelf in a laboratory full of machines and bubbling chemicals and you spin to some frantic inane music with maniacal laughter and electrical buzzing in this madhouse! Although slightly juvenile, the graphics aren't too bad and the slot certainly appears interesting on first impressions, so what does the Mad Scientist have planned for our bankroll?
On the reels...
A good start here is that (bearing in mind recent WMS slots with many lines and low pays such as Kronos Unleashed) we only have 50 paying lines over our 5 reels of 3 rows each. Symbols can be stacked and pays for 5-of-a-kinds are thus better than usual: the game logo pays 5x, Brain 4x, Ammeter and Wrench 3x and the Book 2x our 50-coin stake. Remaining icons are 4 card values all paying 1x. There are stacked Battery Wilds on all 5 reels though so assuming the same pay as the top icon we could get 250x bet for a full screen and they do appear frequently on the reels. Now, in a lab setting surely they should be some explosive action and fun to be had?
Robot bonus spins
The Robot appears stacked on all reels and doesn't actually pay anything but if you see 6 or more in view interesting events can occur! The game has internal jackpots like Wishing You Fortune and these are Mini at 20x bet, Minor 100x, Major 2000x and finally Grand at 5000x. When 6 Robots appear they are locked in place for 5 re-spins.
After re-spins adjacent ones will simply pay 1x, 2x or 3x bet for 1,2 or 3. If you see 4 adjacent Robots you'll get Mini or Minor jackpot or up to 20x bet. Six will do the same but with up to 40x bet if no Mini Or Minor, eight the same but with up to 80x bet, 9 again either Mini or Minor with up to 100x bet. You really need 10 or more in a block as this then opens up the Major jackpot or awards up to 150x bet. 12 does either the Minor or Major or up to 250x, all 15 on the screen awards either Major or Grand, if not up to 750x stake. This is quite an exciting round to watch unfold and you'll be unfortunate not to get at least a Mini of 20x.
Scientist spins
See the Mad Scientist scatter on any 3 positions or more and 12 free games are yours. During these the centre reel changes to only stacked Wilds and Scientist scatters and re-triggers may be won. When the re-triggers occur can be quite a long and fun bonus.
Our View...
Volts And Bolts slot is quite generous in the base game to ensure your balance will get a decent try-out here and despite this there is some serious potential in the bonus rounds, especially the Robot jackpots feature. The RTP is an average 95.63% and if you can tolerate the inanity of the theme then you should enjoy a session on Volts And Bolts. The free games aren't usually up to much but do often re-trigger so at least there's some entertainment to be had. I wouldn't say the volts here jump-started me into life as such, but there was a spark of affection for the game when I left...
