The One Armed Bandit slot by Yggdrasil brings us a Wild West theme with the reels set over a rickety wooden stoop and the obligatory guitar and harmonica music of the era to ease us in to the soundtrack. We should therefore expect some gunshots or something when a win appears but no, just a change in the musical score so we haven't the polished finish that Netent's Dead or Alive 2 or Wild Wild West has, more like the clonkey original Dead or Alive game. Will we leave this dust blown old town with our bankroll, or will this bandit relieve us of our gold?
On The Reels...
A pretty mundane start here on The One Armed Bandit slot with 20 fixed pay lines over 5 reels of 3 rows apiece, and this is indicative of this simple but potentially volatile game. Your symbols hold no surprises with the best 5-of-a-kind the Pistol at 80x bet, Hip Flask 60x, Stetson 35x, Stirrups 20x with four card suits paying 6.5 down to 3.5x for a full line. Cowboy scatters appear on all reels and these are how we initiate the 5x Sheriff Star Wilds which can appear on all reels too, but only via the scatters as we shall learn.
Scatter Wilds
OK, so any Cowboy scatter appearing will light up the Star above its respective reel and offer a respin with the scatter now a 5x Wild on its reel. It may come in and form part of a win and/or another Cowboy may appear which initiates a second respin and so-on. These respins stop once no more scatters appear and a Wild has appeared on the grid regardless of a win or when you have turned all 5 scatters Wild on the reels in which case the free games are initiated.
Free Games
These begin with 8 to 12 spins on a general 5x multiplier and the 5x Wild is on all reels with the Cowboy scatter now a Bandit scatter. Once you hit 2 scatters, the overall multiplier goes to 10x, land another 2 scatters and it rises to 20x with each scatter during this process adding a free spin. Your multiplier is maxed out at 20x and with 5x Wilds your top 5-of-a-kind win can now be multiplied 100x which means Pistols could pay you 8000x bet for a full line with a Wild!
Our View...
The One Armed Bandit slot is great fun to play and has an inventive mechanic but be aware, it's a volatile game with significant potential therefore can be brutal in the base game and the free games will either reward you well or leave your whisky tumbler empty. I didn't like the annoying Yggdrasil sounds when wins occur as these have been taken from other slots and don't really relate to the Western theme, but aside from that the graphics, animations and effects are good along with the 96.30% RTP. You may get well rewarded in this dusty outpost, but you'll also need to be quick on the draw with this one-armed bandit...
