Rise of Maya slot summary
Rise of Maya slot by Netent takes us into a creepy dark Mayan tomb lit by torches and hinting of impending perils. The transparent reels and doom laden sounds and music complete the atmosphere here as we risk life and gold to enter. It's a bit more realistic than IGT's Maya Gold slot and far more detailed than Red Tiger's rather plain Mayan Gods so I would compare it aesthetically with Ainsworth's Mayan Gold which is also a decent looking game. So will our bankroll rise with the Maya or be doomed eternally to this lost temple?
On The Reels...
We have quite a volatile game here which is not only indicated by the fact that Rise of Maya slot only has 10 pay lines but also the high 5-of-a-kind pays. These are 500x bet for any of the several varieties of Gold Idol Wilds and also the Feathered Mask, 100x Orange Mask, 60x Brown, 40x Green, 30x Grey with five card values paying 15 down to 6x for a full line. Symbols can appear stacked as well. In the base game it's all about those Wilds though.
Wild Types
You get 4 types as follows:
Single Serpent - only appears on the top or bottom row.
Expanding Serpent - can appear anywhere and the first type expands upwards, the other downwards which may or may not fill the reel depending on the row they land in.
Stacked Serpent - only appears in free spins, will always fill the whole reel if landing on a reel where a triggering Wild or scatter was.
Random Nudge
Can occur after any non-winning spin including the free games and will nudge either a Wild or scatter in, possible on more than one reel.
Free Games
You need 3 or more scatters which you'll be pleased to know that any Wild type can substitute for. You get 10 for 3, 15 and 20 for 4 or 5 respectively. The stacked Serpent Wild will always fill the whole reel if landing on one of the triggering scatter/Wild reels. You can't retrigger them and if you double your bet, you get a random respin when only 2 scatters appear to increase your chances of a triggering them in the first place. The non-triggering reels are considered inactive and only Single Serpent or Expanding Serpent Wilds can appear on them. Any that do appear on the inactive reels will add 2 extra spins and that reel then becomes active, or hot as Netent call it.
Our View...
Rise of Maya slot is in my view the best Netent game to be released since Dead or Alive 2. It has good base game potential, huge free spin potential as well as having highly watchable graphics and animations. true, you need to play it at 2x bet to get those free games more frequently which raised the base RTP of 96.12% to 96.42% and with that the free spins can be poor, but get those extra spins and light up all the reels to hot status and just 4 Wilds on the first 4 reels pay well in excess of 1,000x bet. I will most definitely be rising to the challenge of Maya again...
