Icy Wilds slot review
Icy Wilds slot is a welcome departure from IGT usually flogging their 720-way games to death with endless clones of Siberian Storm such as Hexbreaker 2 and Pamplona. Here instead we have 50 lines on a 5 reeler with 4 rows in a game that has already proven a hit in land-based casinos. So will Icy Wilds slot freeze you out?
The symbols in this game are all stacked up to 4 rows high thus full screen hits are possible. The Snow Princess is the top payout at 10x stake for 5-of-a-kind and then we have her crown, ring, a snow leopard, a snow owl among the other picture symbols. The Snow Queen can pay scattered if adjacent to herself or any Wilds if on 2 or more reels. Now we come to those Wilds - there isn't any Wild symbol but you create them by getting any full stack of picture symbols land on a reel (bar the Snow Princess) which creates a Wild reel there for the next paid spin. So for example if you land a losing combination with full stacked Snow Owls on reels 1 and 3, those reels will be Wild for the next spin. They don't stick though should another stack land in this spin; only the new stack will become the Wild reel next spin.
Needless to say the free games scatters are also stacked, and in case you're wondering where the Polar Bear is in this frozen theme, you've found him! You need 3 or more to trigger at least 10 games but they must be on at least 3 separate reels. So yes, you can get 8 scatters on 2 reels stacked and get nothing. There is a scale from 3 awarding 10 free games up to a full screen of 20 awarding 45 spins, and they retrigger in the same manner. With enhanced stacks you are more likely to hit the Wild reels in the bonus.
Icy Wilds slot is a refreshing format from IGT, something new for a change. Like all IGT's it tends to be quite 'streaky' in its play but having the reel(s) frozen to Wild quite frequently adds to player anticipation and can actually fulfil it with some decent pays. The RTP is 92.24-96.24% so quite decent and the volatility I'd classify as medium. Free spins are hard to trigger but seldom pay poorly and along with unintrusive sound effects make for a cool game (ahem!) Time for me to get my skiing gear out...
