Berryburst MAX slot is the first Netent game for a while to actually offer the player a chance of wins exceeding their usual maths models' 250-400x bet maxima. That said, it appeared to me at first sight to combine the sum of all fears, their dreary and over-used 'Cluster Pays' format, applied to their loathsome Starburst slot. You will have seen games such as Twin Spin Deluxe and Aloha! Cluster Pays or The Legend Of Shangri La that use clusters and while visually exciting they offer little potential. Starburst is a simple game with bright colours and most casinos use it to award players free spins on and it has a maximum pay of 500x which to my knowledge nobody has yet achieved. OK, perhaps I'm being a little unfair on Starburst as it is very popular amongst some of the playing fraternity for its visuals and 'safe' mechanic, so surely these two ideas could never be combined to make a decent slot?
We open to a very colourful orange and red background with synthesized jaunty music combined with a Caribbean Steel Band sound, though firstly there aren't many Caribbean fruits here and secondly not many berries either! Moving on, we have the Starburst-style appearance with stacked symbols and both-way-pays which means you win from the right of the reels too. Wins are awarded for adjacent clusters of 5 or more symbols so pays can be from 5 to 15 symbols.
The pays are quite good and you cannot win less than 1x stake for any win. There are only seven standard icons and your Raspberry will award a very juicy 1000xbet for a full screen of 15 down to 3x for the minimum 5-cluster. Taking those extremes, the Orange Segments are 500/2x, Cherries and Limes 250/1.5x and finally you'll see 3 coloured bubbles overlaid with card suits which all pay 100/1x. So what potential does Berryburst MAX actually have?
Yes, like Starburst we get Expanding Wilds on the reels, only here we get them on all 5 rather than just the central 3 reels. When one appears it expands, pays the win and then remains in place as the other reels re-spin. Should another appear then both remain for another re-spin and so-on. Netent inform us that the maximum win is 6000x bet. So, for that scenario we would need one Wild to appear initially with the rest of the screen filled with Raspberries for 1000x, then the two Wilds to hold with the remaining 3 reels spinning in full Raspberries etc. so we would end up with six 1000x pays. To put that in perspective, about the same chance of your lottery numbers coming up for a second consecutive draw during a total solar eclipse at the same moment the Faroe Islands lift the World Cup.
Berryburst MAX slot is where many players believe Netent should be going after so many games with sub-mediocre pay potential that fail to give them any belief that they can win something of significance. Somehow they've blended two stale ingredients and made a very good slot here which has a decent base game, no annoying 'micro wins' and of course can (and does) pay some sizeable hits! The visuals are good and when you have Wild re-spins, knowing that you could get all 5 reels gives a sense of anticipation each time. The RTP is 96.23% and the only negative I have observed here is the dreadful and tiresome music in the background, although it can be muted if it grates on you as much as it did me. At last! - a Netent slot has appeared which I'm berry likely (sorry) to play again...
