Wizard slot was developed by one of the many smaller companies in the Greentube group, in this case Apex and appears via the Novomatic platform. This means we get the comfort of the familiar Novo sound effects such as the ‘trotting’ noise as reels stop although we dispense with the wheedling sound as the reels spin because instead we hear some mysterious music in keeping with the theme. The game sits over a night graphic of a stone vault and includes all the paraphernalia one may expect when entering the world of magic and spells. The graphics could remind you of Nextgen’s Merlin’s Millions game or Merlin’s Magic Re-spins rather than trademarked games such as the WMS Wizard of Oz – Ruby Slippers, but will this Wizard’s spell magnify or shrink your winning chances?
On the reels…
Novomatic have dispensed with their high volatility here, normally so typical of most of their slots such as Book Of Ra. Instead have given us 50 pay lines over a 5×4 grid and a lower volatility experience. We get stacked symbols on all reels including the Wizard who is Wild and offers us 20x bet for a 5-of-a-kind win, thus the top pay possible for a full screen at 1000x bet. The crystal and gold ring pay 10x, spells book and Ravens 5x, potion and mixing bowl both 2.5x and the card values either 2 or 1x bet for the 5. We can exceed the pay for 5 Wilds though if we see 5 Red Dragon scatters in view, as not only would we trigger the slot’s bonus, but be awarded with 200x bet too!
Wizard’s spell spins
Having landed 3 or more Red Dragons we are taken to a free games bonus which consists of 15 spins and can be retriggered. As you may know, Novomatic free spins have a tendency to award frequent retriggers and to assist us 3 extra scatters are added to the reels along with 16 extra Wilds to make those multi-line hits far more likely. Usually a productive bonus, especially with any retriggers you may see.
Wizard slot is a welcome change from the usual volatile Novomatic offerings but still gives us the chance of some sizeable hits in the base game due to the stacked Wilds and frequent small wins. The free spins tend to pay well and retrigger frequently, although bear in mind that despite the decent 95.00% RTP, much of Wizard’s returns are allocated to the bonus round. The graphics and sounds along with animations are pretty basic but that is normal for this developer’s low-bandwidth and more reliable games so I cannot place too much emphasis on that fact. The Wizard on these reels certainly looks friendly and after trying out his offerings I’d have to say I won’t worry too much about falling under his spell again…
