Sun Chief slot is themed on the ancient Aztec civilization of Central America, making it similar in look and feel to RTG's Aztec's Treasure and Play'n Go's Aztec Warrior Princess slots. As we would probably expect the reels sit against an Aztec Temple lined by the greenery of the jungle and we keep the familiar Ainsworth trotting sound as the reels spin, which you may have noted Novomatic and EGT favour too. The slot provides some decent animations when Wilds and wins appear, but can the Chief make the sun shine on our bankroll?
Ainsworth have departed from their usual 5x3 grid here and we get an odd 3-3-4-4-4 pattern, something WMS have on their Bruce Lee slot but with only 2 rows on the first reels. This is handy as the stacked Wilds only appear on the last 3 reels and arrive with a nice animation of the Sun Chief when fully in view. There are 30 pay lines and aside for the Sun chief Wilds all the icons are single with the best being the Temple at 25x bet for a full 5-of-a-kind followed by the Eagle at 8x, Jaguar and Llama at 7x and Toucan at 5x. You get six card values all paying 100 coins for a full line but the Sun Stone scatters will actually yield 50x bet if you trigger the Sun Chief's bonus with all five in view.
Having seen 3 of the Sun Stone scatters you will be treated to an inventive free spins bonus. You get 8 spins to begin with and the scatters disappear from the last three reels, but don't worry as 2 on the first two reels will award 5 extra games. You do get Shields added to reel 3 though, and these act as Wilds but are sticky and increase in multiplier up to a maximum of 5x. Your usual Sun Chief Wilds appear on the last two reels still and these aren't stacked any more but become sticky for 3 spins. You can find you have nearly an effective 5x block Wild if you trigger the extra games.
Sun Chief slot looks good and is promising when we start to play but it soon becomes apparent it's just another formulaic Ainsworth with stacked Wilds on the last 3 reels. If you're familiar with Ainsworth games of late you'll be wondering if it pulls their usual stunt of reducing the picture icon wins in the free games; yes it does! The wins for the three best 5-of-a-kinds are reduced to a sixth, fifth and quarter of base game amounts respectively. The RTP is pretty typical too, at 94.06% and volatility quite low so the base game pays small wins often. Sun Chief he may be, but I didn't find much warmth with this game...
