Rome - The Golden Age slot by Netent is their attempt to join the latter day fad for very volatile slots with big top prizes. For example NoLimit City's San Quentin xWays slot is one, Big Time Gaming's Lil' Devil slot another and a third which can exceed 100,000x bet is of course Netent's own Dead or Alive 2 slot. Here we have the typical Roman classical music, symbols and the reels over a temple, so no surprises there. Can we see an orgy of wins for our bankroll or will it be fed to then lions?
The reels on Rome - The Golden Age slot are in a 3-4-5-4-3 pattern but we only get 20 pay lines. The 5-of-a-kind pays are low for a reason as we will see later. They are 5x Wild or Tiger, Eagle or Ring 2.5x, Helmet or Sword 1.2x with five card values of 0.9 down to 0.4x. The game has Golden Coins which don't pay landing on the grid and each 200 collected increases the multiplier for when you trigger free games. The multiplier starts at 1x, 2x, 3x, 5x and if you collected 3600 coins without triggering the bonus, it would go to a maximum 1000x, but I doubt it will happen as often as you get the 300x on Nextgen's 300 Shields slot!
Each time you land one, it will turn its position gold on the grid and add to the multiplier counter. If one lands in a gold position, it also adds to the counter but may turn into a 'ROME' symbol. These in turn may randomly transform some or even all of the gold positions on the grid into Wilds. Once this happens, any with Wilds will return to normal. It's the only way you'll achieve any big wins here.
You need scatters on reels 2, 3 and 4 for these. You start with 3 spins and are now playing either blanks or ROME symbols on a re-spin basis. Any gold positions live on the triggering spin will display a coin win of 0.5 to 50x bet. Any ROME symbol landing will also offer up one of those values, turn the position gold and reset the re-spins to 3. Any money collected when you run out of spins is multiplied by the multiplier you accrued previously in the base game. If you fill the grid, the multiplier you have is doubled. There doesn't appear to be a maximum win in the rules, but surely this could be well in excess of 100,000x stake IF you had earned the 1000x multiplier?
Rome - The Golden Age slot has a RTP of 96.06% and suffers the same disadvantage as all slots with progressive collection features - you feel compelled to keep playing to raise the multiplier and thus the rarely-triggered bonus. the base game isn't bad as you often get 10-30x bet wins via the ROME symbol and its Wild transformations. Free games is another matter if you imagine playing for ages to accrue a big multiplier then getting a pathetic coin total. If you don't however, this really could be a golden visit to Rome...
