The Grand slot is noticeably different to the usual 5-reel offerings from Swedish developer Quickspin, a fact which becomes apparent quickly when taking your first view. The reels are formatted in a similar way to some Netent slots such as Dazzle Me and Motorhead and there's a bit of Twin Spin thrown in too here. I'm not sure where the title The Grand came from as it's a plain glowing background with plain reels and pretty plain symbols too and all we hear is some music you might find being piped into a hotel lift. Plain all round, not grand at all but if it can add some colour to our bankroll all could be forgiven.
We have a climbing amount of reel rows here and there are six of them in total with 3 rows on the first two, 4 on the middle two and 5 rows on the last two. Symbols are stacked and we have a rather odd 214 lines formed by all combinations of adjacently-joined symbols. You can play for as little 10 coins and the 6-of-a-kind pays are 8x bet for the Green Gems, 4x Purple Gem with 4 card suits paying either 1.2 or 1x for a line of six. You don't even get any Wilds for now although scatters can appear on all the reels but there is more to this game!
You can see one of three modifiers occur on any spin. There are symbols for these modifiers under the two smaller reels on the left and there can be 3 to 8 random Wilds placed on the grid, 1 to 3 reels can nudge up or down to improve things for you or finally 1 to 3 pairs of reels can synchronise with the same symbols on all. These modifiers are also relevant to the bonus as we're now going to discover.
You need 3 or more Free Spin scatters anywhere to trigger your bonus. You'll get 6,9,12 or 15 for 3,4,5 or 6 scatters respectively. You cannot retrigger but there are now Bonus Scatters on reels 3,4 and 5. Every time you see these land, you'll be given one of the above three modifiers on all remaining spins, plus be awarded 1 to 3 extra spins. So it's possible to end up with all 3 modifiers in play for the final spins of the bonus which is just as well as without those features the free spins are usually pretty dire.
The Grand slot seems a bit of a lazy effort from Quickspin if the truth be told. Usually their slots are far more colourful and detailed and offer some good potential, but alas this game doesn't really stir the juices at all. The RTP is very good at 96.58% and the base game is quite good for your balance generally with regular random modifiers but the bonus is over very quickly and seldom pays much despite a theoretical maximum win of over 1500x bet. The slot is quite dull in appearance and soon becomes repetitive so I can only assume the name is ironic here...
