Gem Zone slot review
Gem Zone by Leander Games is quite an imaginative attempt at emulating the classic Big Time Gaming Megaways mechanic on games like Dragon Born but does it slightly differently, calling it 'Dynamic Ways'. We get purple reels over a colourful cosmic background with oddly Oriental type music as you play so like many gem games it looks pretty basic. Red Tiger's Gemtastic is possibly the nearest slot in looks to compare this to, or Nextgen's Lightning gems but it's all about the new Leander mechanic here. So will this game be a gem for our bankroll or push us into the losing zone?
On The Reels...
We get 5 reels in play initially and each reel will display a highlighted Zone over it of 3 to 5 rows therefore you have 243 to 3125 ways possible on each spin. Bonus scatters appear on the odd reels only and Star Wilds on all reels bar the first. There are 6-of-a-kind pays possible in the free games but for now the 5-of-a-kind pays are Red gem 3x, Green 1.5x, Yellow, Blue or Pink 0.75x with five card values paying 0.6 to 0.4x for a way of 5. The 6-of-a-kind pays are approximately double of those. No modifiers, so on to the bonus!
Free Spins
Having landed the scatter Bonus on reels 1,3 and 5 you get 10 free games. You now get 6 reels all of which display 5 to 7 rows hence 15,625 to 117,649 ways are available per spin. The 6OAK pays are now active and retriggers occur when you get the scatters on the even reels 2, 4 and 6. Some potential here, but not like most Megaways games can pay.
Our View...
Gem Zone slot is definitely different looking and has reasonable graphics, sounds and animations along with a RTP of 95.80%. The base game just has little potential though and soon becomes boring to play, the moving reel row blocks just don't have the same appeal that the varying rows of the Megaways slots do. The bonus is frequent enough but seldom pays well despite the possibilities. This game just won't ever get me in the zone...
