Riddle of the Sphinx slot by Red Tiger is a rare excursion into ancient Egypt for this developer. We last saw their Mega Pyramid slot which was pretty average and since then the classic old theme has been left to others. The most notable were Blueprint's volatile Eye of Horus Megaways and my choice, the Elk Studios Cygnus slot with it's glossy new mechanic. Here it's pretty par for the course with traditional soft music of the genre and the inevitable symbols and background the Egypt slots always seem to present. So can we save our bankroll from the sandstorm here or will the only riddle be where it all went so quickly?
On the reels...
You play 20 lines here on Riddle of the Sphinx slot with symbols appearing stacked. There is a double-row Pharaoh Wild which can appear anywhere on the reels and will turn all adjacent symbols wild so that means you will end up with a 3x3 or 3x4 block of them if fully in view, 2x2 or 2x3 if just half is in view. Your 5-of-a-kind pays are 50 bet Gold Scarab, 25x Eye of Horus, 20x Clasp, 15x Ankh with five card values paying 10 down to 4x for each full line. Your final symbol is a Free Spins Scatter which appears on the odd reels and provides our only feature here.
It's an old tried and tested formula here with a choice of free spin quantities and their Wild multiplier for any wins using Wilds in them. You need scatters on reels 1, 3 and 5 and should any 1 or 2 land you get a re-spin to see if another lands and so-on. If you like volatile you can choose 6 spins with Wilds at 8x, 12 with them at 4x and finally 24 spins with 2x Wilds and these multipliers stay the same regardless of how many appear in any one line or win. There is a mystery option which chooses a 'random' pair of values if you want to risk going for 24 spins at 8x, or more likely getting 6 at 2x although we are told this 'random' option is the best strategy! We are also told the maximum yield in testing was 8,002x bet so there is indeed some potential for big wins here although no retriggers, but the Pharaoh Wild is far more frequent.
Riddle of the Sphinx slot has a 95.66% RTP and isn't the worst Egyptian slot I've ever seen but then again brings absolutely nothing new to the theme. The graphics, sounds and animation sequences are nice and glossy here but be aware, the game is highly volatile. Base game hits of over 15x bet are rare but you'll need them a few times while waiting for the 3 scatters which are extremely difficult to land. When they do come in, they are quite exciting because it doesn't take much to hit a big combination with the now multiplying block Pharaoh Wilds. Unwrap the riddle here and you could well end up taking home treasure from these desert sands...
