Fortunes of The Dead slot summary
Fortunes of The Dead slot is another developed by Nextgen's Canadian subsidiary Side City Studios and a jolly decent effort it is too, especially if you like colourful slots! The theme is the same as Play 'n Go's Grim Muerto slot and reflects the Mexican way of remembering their dear departed with bright colours and items left on the verandah overnight during the Muerto festival. The reels are set against a dusky sky with bright carnations as one of the colourful offerings and we get the inevitable Mexican folk music as a soundtrack, but will this slot bring fortune or death to our bankroll?
On the reels...
An explosion of colour greets us for our 50-line game over 5 reels of 3 rows with icons all depicting the various gifts and images of the event. The Skeleton Wild pays the top award of 10x bet for a full 5-of-a-kind line as does the game's logo icon. We then see death depicted in various male and female attire with pays of 5, 4 and 3.5x stake and the offerings such as candles, fruit and coins paying 3x down to 1x bet for the full 5.
The Skeleton does get generous sometimes in return as at any time he may trigger his 'Once In A Wild' feature, a respin with 4 randomly-placed Wilds in his image laid on the grid. The remaining features are triggered in the normal way and we have two possibilities:
Skull Bonus - If the decorative Skull appears on reels 1, 3 and 5 you will be taken to a screen where you choose one of tree skulls for a mediocre cash award.
Free Spins - These are triggered by three of the Dead Horsemen appearing on reels 2, 3 and 4. You get 5 spins which cannot be retriggered and on each spin a randomly-positioned sticky Wild is placed somewhere on the grid although any Wilds appearing naturally during the spin do not become sticky.
It's possible to trigger any 2 of the 3 above events simultaneously too, so our bony friend can be a giver as well as a taker apparently.
Our View...
Fortunes of The Dead slot is low-volatility colourful fun if you like that sort of thing in a game and the RTP is a quite alive 95.79%. Bear in mind the biggest winning line is 10x bet and the free spins or Skull Bonus not easy to trigger and you get the picture here - you survive on frequent annoyingly small wins and the Once In A Wild random feature. The music and sounds get tiresome quite quickly and to be frank I wasn't far from joining the dear departed, in my case by being bored to death...
