Highlander slot may be a game you've already seen if you've ever played the Electracade version with near-identical characters but packed with multiple features, something we're not going to find in this Trademarked film version. The Highlander film was a 1986 Anglo-American flop which later became a cult classic, starring Sean Connery and launching the career of Chris Lambert and the characters appear here in the game with the dramatic film music as our soundtrack and a spectacular overcast doom-laden highland scene behind the reels. Microgaming have previously made good use of film themes, most notably with Jurassic Park, Jurassic World and Terminator 2 with their high winning potential, so does Highlander promise any boosts to our bankroll, or like these characters will everything be an almighty battle?
There are 243-ways on this game over 5 reels of 3 rows each and 2 types of symbol, the characters and card values. We pay 40-coins per play and the game's logo forms the Wild on all reels paying 20x bet for 5-of-a-kind. The Connor Macleod characters pay 500 or 400 coins, Kurgan 250, Heather MacLeod 200 and Brenda Wyatt 150, with the five card values all paying 90 coins down to 50. You get Gold scatters on all reels and these offer us 100x bet for all 5 appearing and like the rest of the icons, are single only. There is also a decent touch that when 2 scatters appear only, they will turn Wild.
If you see 3 or more scatters you are awarded 10 free spins after a short animation, which on the surface offer no enhancement. On occasion though you may see the 'Quickening Wilds' appear whereby a flash of lightning and dramatic music is the portent to a random position being turned Wild on the grid. I said 'Wild' as the singular, but the more the lightning occurs the higher the number the Wilds gets, increasing by 1 each time. If you got it on all 10 spins, which cannot retrigger by the way, you'd thus have 10 random Wilds on the final spin.
Highlander slot makes good use of the music from the film but has very limited graphics and animations and has no film clips, which is unusual for this type of movie-themed slot. The base game volatility is very low and soon becomes tedious - we need some excitement from these mythical battles here! Aside from the two-scatter spins turning Wild, there is just the one feature and if you don't see the lightning 2 or 3 times in the first 5 spins then you can predict a disappointing outcome in most cases. The bonus does have potential though and is the only saving grace for an otherwise dreary game. I get the feeling that if this had been a Blockbuster film like Jurassic World then there would have been a bit more effort at entertaining the player with random features and different bonus rounds, but alas no. I won't be booking another trip to the lochs and glens...
