Microgaming and Playtech aren’t the only developer to offer franchised slots, and Nextgen Gaming have proven this with their DC Comics-inspiried Justice League. We have the immense and irresistible combined forces of Batman, Wonderwoman and Superman etc., taken from the comics that have been such a huge hit with readers over the years. The Justice League would serve to protect the good citizens of the Metropolis against evil and that story is continued in this video slot. The game is the standard 3-row 5-reel format with 25 paylines and all reels are pictures, no A, K, Q here!
Superman himself is the top-paying symbol and pays 10x stake for 5-of-a-kind (5OAK) and his daytime employer, the Daily Planet Newspaper makes an appearance as the game’s scatter. The lowest symbol only pays 0.67x stake for 5OAK but we will see why shortly….
Wilds with Kerpowwww!
There are Wilds on reels 2, 3 and 4 and they appear on there own and don’t multiply but they are enhanced by a random feature which on any spin can turn a symbol on those same reels Wild to double the likelihood of hitting them. Justice League keeps the action coming as you would expect with superheroes – they appear stacked on reel 1 which leads to another in-play feature: should one fall in all 3 positions AND create a win, a series of Superhero respins is triggered whereby reel 5 also turns stacked to mirror reel 1 and the rest of the positions re-spin, until no more Wilds or similar symbols are added. This feature appears on Nextgen’s ‘Cash Stampede’ too. The random extra wilds can appear during this so it’s not unusual to form multiple 5OAK wins before this re-spin feature finishes, hence the less than titanic 5OAK pays.
Daily Planet a Stellar Feature?
3 Daily Planet scatters trigger the main free games feature on Justice League. They appear, like the Wilds, on reels 2, 3 and 4. You start with 10 free spins and a superhero spins meter on the right whereby you can accumulate up to 5 superhero spins to be played afterwards by the appearance of Wilds moving the meter on. A superhero spin is where the reels are guaranteed to put a stacked character on reels 1 and 5 and spin the rest of the reels until no more lines are completed. You can re-trigger the free spins and there is an interesting random element – the spacecraft may swoop and award extra free spins too. The spins are played at 1x multiplier and the only enhancements are extra random Wilds appearing on reels 2, 3 and 4.
So, having completed the free games, we play the superhero spins accumulated. Like the first free spins, the spacecraft can zap you random extra superhero spins and now multipliers for any wins gained too. So if you successfully link up the stacked heroes on the outside reels with wilds and similar characters during the re-spins then you may get awarded up to a 10x multiplier on the outcome! This means you potentially hit 2500x stake for a full screen of Batman. The Wilds also help the meter add more superhero spins as before. This superhero spins feature is essentially the same as Microgaming’s Bust The Bank slot’s free games.
Having given Justice league by Nextgen a fair trial, my jury has delivered a verdict: not guilty of being boring and the random Wilds and feature are frequent enough to maintain interest. The volatility isn’t very high so if you’re a Medusa II fan then this may not be for you. My visit to the Metropolis went well and no doubt I shall stop off there again…
